relay coordination studiesWhat Occurs During Relay Coordination Studies?

Relay coordination studies are a time-current study of your business’ protective devices and over-current relays. The study gives a comparison of the amount of time required for protective devices to operate when particular amounts of typical and atypical currents are passing through them. During a study, we will test the configuration of your protective devices. This includes your relays, circuit breakers, and switches. We set up your protective devices to trip in a desired order during fault conditions or overloads, so that the protective device closest to any fault or overload will be the only one affected. This also helps isolate any problem area from your entire power system. We calibrate each device and set the right coordination between each of them.

Overcurrent protection coordination studies (another name for relay coordination studies) help prevent personnel injuries and help minimize the amount of damage that occurs to system components and equipment. They ensure that equipment is properly protected. If a service interruption should occur, protective device coordination can limit the extent of the outage and the duration of the outage. This study should be done any time a new protective device is added or modified. If no changes have occurred, it still should be conducted in Dallas-Ft Worth businesses at least every 5 years.
